Blood and Chocolate Ghazal
by Gwynne Garfinkle

The lovers I write inhabit my dreams, uncomplicated.
He takes her in his arms, they kiss. It seems uncomplicated.

Blood and Chocolate is my favorite break-up album.
Track 1: Elvis Costello sings and screams "Uncomplicated."

Him with her at the nightclub. Driving home, I cried until I laughed.
I howled, I came apart at the seams, uncomplicated.

"The Devil in Miss Jones," "Wet Rainbow," the golden age of porn:
Georgina Spelvin's fucked by Harry Reems, uncomplicated.

A year ago he shut me out, apparently for good.
I guess he needs a life he deems uncomplicated.

Godiva plus red wine. Fizzy lemonade and whiskey.
Dark chocolate filled with butter cream's uncomplicated.

Gwynne doesn't know why it should be so difficult.
The word that best describes her schemes: uncomplicated.
